After leaving the Practice she co-founded MWB Consultants which built on her experience in fire protection within the commercial environment. In 2008 the company was acquired by an international fire protection holding company which later merged into Mott MacDonald in 2012. SLW also worked with the construction industry to provide solutions for fire and life safety of new build and refurbished projects. Her experience with the construction industry led her to found the Construction Industries Research and Advisory Group (CIRAG), and she helped to create the industry standard for fire safety of buildings. The first edition of her first publication on Building Materials And Construction was published in 1999 and went on to become the most sold textbook on fire safety on the planet with over a million copies sold
In addition to her work for the construction sector SLW was involved in a number of other fire safety campaigns. She helped create the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)’s Firewise standard and championed their initiatives for low-cost and mass-accessible fire protection measures. She also helped create the CEE Firewall Standard which was subsequently adopted as the global standard and has since been implemented in over 28 countries worldwide.
She received the James Glover Architecture Stirling Prize in 2006 for the Granville Island Hotel, Vancouver, British Columbia. The prize recognised her work on development strategy and her vision for future generations and building techniques, describing her as one of Europe’s most original and influential professionals.
