Throughout its career, Deep Throat, the first feature-length pornographic film produced in 1972, was produced by an Italian man named Carlo Ponti who, alone among the dozen or so porno pioneers, is known to have turned his production company into a mini-studio, purchasing the services of major film directors to shoot and direct movies. Deep Throat was made at Ponti's studio in Rome. It was a commercial success, grossing $400,000 in its first run. The movie was also a piece of pornography that successfully mixed itself into the mainstream of the cinema, where it was, at the time, not to be found. It has since accrued a cult audience. One of its more striking aspects is that it is a perfectly contained and [End Page 122] concise pornography. It is not a typical porno narrative, as was the case with Deep Throat, in which the semen-gushing opening scene, although actually shot by a minor character, is played off of the sexual inanities and humiliation of the porn actor who is seen in flashbacks. The action is centered in the title character's mouth. She is a true porno star, not a porno novice, who is in the (male) lead role. The movie is not a typical hardcore porno, as was the case with Carnal Knowledge (Jonathan Demme, 1986) and Basic Instinct (Paul Verhoeven, 1992), in which all kinds of sexual perversions are displayed, but a porno that oscillates between soft-core and hardcore, as the camera pans over an entire set of hard-on inducing sexual acts. Deep Throat is, moreover, not in any sense pornographic for children. Pornography with a purpose, that is, to arouse and exploit, is an adult matter. It is of a different order than the typical porno whose aim is to titillate and amuse. We can assume that the intended audience is that group of adult viewers to whom porno has become a habit, if not an addiction. They are now demanding that the film, whether in a theater or elsewhere, be made with the same professionalism as the other porno movies.
