Overall, the film is a good effort. It is extremely pious, and makes a great case for the freedom of thought and belief. It is an appropriate film for all ages, and is more inspirational than educational. I would recommend this film to all the Sikhs.
The film has many flaws. Sometime, it becomes too preachy, and the plot gets tight. It seems that the screenplay writers have oversimplified Guru's life. For example, the episode in which Guru begins his travels to Varanasi is very short, and simple. The film doesn't take the time to elaborate on how Guru spent almost 30 years in Varanasi, and the various rites that he performed there. It should have shown this incident in more detail, as this would have added a dimension to the movie, but unfortunately this was not the case.
As the film progresses, we get to know more about Guru's personality. We know that he was extremely compassionate, and that he spent all his time solving people's problems, although he was a very simple man. Even though he left a vast legacy, he was not successful in saving his followers from the persecution by the Mughals, and other rulers. His belief that he would not be able to save his followers, but rather that he would share his message with them, becomes extremely apparent in this movie. Bhai Mardana, though, reveals that their time was up, and it was no longer possible for him to save them.
Similar to ‘Nishaagandhi’, the film is predictable and has a predictable outcome. However, the film also has its own charm which makes it worth watching. There is a perfect mix of emotion and action, and the cinematography is also its strong point.
