A really good film. I have a bit of a problem with the use of the horse as a surrogate for human figures. Having watched it I feel that it is a very old-fashioned way of thinking about war. I have seen the same thing done many, many times. I don’t think it is particularly original or interesting. And it is rather sad that Albert has to be the one to go for his friend. It is very much a soap opera set in the trenches. It is not a really well thought out film. There is nothing of the stark truths of war that you would expect. It is not a graphic film at all. I suppose the intention was to show the beauty of the countryside but I do not really think that the film works. It is a bit of a chore to sit through. The acting is not very good. But the film is good enough to recommend. 7.5/10.
One of the greatest films ever made. It is a beautiful, gorgeous film. Seriously, if you have never seen any Hitchcock before or if you have seen one and it has sucked out your soul, then stop reading and go watch this now. It is like going into a dark room with the only light coming through a window. It is one of those rare films where every single aspect of the film is done perfectly. It is funny, poignant, scary, suspenseful, horrifying, romantic and just really wonderful. The story is about a young farm boy who has a horse called Joey that he names after his pet in childhood. He is a farm boy living in rural Devon in early 1917. One day his father sends him to buy a horse, even though he can’t afford it. He goes to a man in the village who has a very good looking horse. He comes back and says that this horse is great but his owner will sell him for £10. This is a lot of money to a farm boy. But Albert figures that if he somehow manages to buy the horse for 10 pounds that he can make it work. He also figures that if he can get his best friend Joey to be a gun horse he can make the horse carry a gun instead of pulling a gun carriage.
I've watched this movie a bunch of times and I've always really enjoyed it. I don't completely understand why it's nominated for Best Picture (and one of the categories it is nominated for? Best Actress) but that's just the Academy of over-rated people for you. The horse, in this case, is a symbol of an era in which many were either killed or injured because it was declared war. Horse lovers believe that we will NEVER see such a time again. It is a historical document, no doubt. This is one of the most true documentaries about the horse ever made--perhaps because the producers showed actual horses. It is also a very good-looking movie--though the look of the horses in the film is nothing like the magnificent creatures in the book. In short, the film is somewhat touching--though I know some horse lovers will disagree.
To be honest, the film's biggest problem lies in the fact that it's a sentimental piece (which is apparently what makes it worthy of an Oscar nod). Who cares about the horse? We've seen horses die in WWI (see The First World War--another Oscar nominee for Best Picture) and we've seen them sell for food as well as being shot in the head. We've seen WWI--why must we see a horse captured and shipped across the ocean only to be heroically killed at war's end (again, we've seen this in WWI). 827ec27edc
